02 / ROOTS & REASONS
Local character.
Not off the shelf.
Hickory Heron is a small, family-run workshop on Lady’s Island, in the heart of South Carolina’s Lowcountry.
It started with one simple frustration. When we moved here, finding quality furniture at a fair price was harder than it should be. After more than twenty years of woodworking as a passionate hobbyist, the answer seemed obvious: build it ourselves, and build it right.
The name says what we’re about. The heron is a familiar sight in the marshes around our home, patient, steady and unmistakably Lowcountry. Hickory is one of the toughest American hardwoods, the wood people reach for when something has to hold up. Put them together and you get what we try to make every day: pieces with local character that are built to last.
Today the shop goes beyond furniture. We cut custom guitar parts on our CNC machine, design and 3D-print replacement and specialty parts, and take on custom fabrication projects that don’t fit neatly in a catalog.
Every piece is made by hand, with care, at a price that’s fair. If you’ve got an idea, we’d love to hear it.
